The Superintendent’s Report of the March 10, 2009 Board of Education (BOE) meeting started with honoring the Eagle Academy students who achieved their National Restaurant Association Certificates. This is a national test worth 3 credits at ACCC. The students also prepared a meal for BOE members that night which received high praise. Recognition of the Girls and Boys Swim Team followed. Both teams are CAL American Conference Champions. The Girls team is also NJSIAA South Jersey Public A Champions and has Individual Relay Champions. Dr. McCartney then reported that the January enrollment figures for the district are 8094 students. He concluded his report announcing a revised calendar for this school year with the last day of school being 6/23/09.

In the Public portion, a gentleman in the audience questioned the cost for the roof at the Fernwood Middle School. BOE members shared that although the type of roof chosen is a higher up front cost, it has longer guarantee, has reflective properties which will go along with the solar panels being installed, and overlaps vs seamed roof. I inquired when the new student information system allowing parents/guardians access to their student’s current progress will be available. Dr. McCartney said this feature will be up and running for the 2009/2010 school year in September. Several cafeteria workers expressed concerns about their jobs due to the new state budget restriction on school cafeteria spending which now must be self sustaining. Our food services and most other districts have a deficit and use other funding to subsidize food services. Since the district is in the middle of negotiations for a new contract for it’s personnel, neither the BOE nor the EHT Education Association is able to provide much information as to the future of the workers but both are doing what they can to keep all positions.

Under Curriculum, an abbreviated day for the High School for May 29, 2009 was approved in anticipation of the high number of buses, spectators, and student athletes arriving for the NJSIAA Boys and Girls State Group Track Meet.

In Committee Reports, Pete Castellano reported that the EHT Community Partnership raised $20,000 for the school district at the dinner dance and roast for Dr. Heery in February. Ms. Barb Szilagyi congratulated the bus drivers for the great job in the snow and reiterated that due to our district being a 3 tier bus system and with half day Kindergarten, a late start is not possible for our district.
