                                   EHT's Education Resource Network

Before I report on the January 13, 2009 Board of Education meeting ( BOE), I’d like to talk about my concerns for the EHT Home and School Association and it’s future. The HSA is behind Project Graduation, the all night drug and alcohol free party held for graduating seniors and their guests, Summer Enrichment Program available for K-8 grade students in July, a Special Needs Program to help parents network and deal with issues related to a special needs student, Scholarships, Candidate’s Night in conjunction with the EHT Education Association, budget committee to monitor BOE spending and articles in the Current to apprise you of what’s happening at the BOE meetings and in our district. For over 25 years when the HSA was started by a group of parents concerned about large class sizes and the quality of education, the HSA has been an important part of EHT.

My son is a high school junior and most of the other officers of the organization have students that are about to graduate or have graduated from college yet they still remain involved. Who will take their place as they decide to leave their positions? In order for the organization to survive, new members are needed. Joining is easy and free; just go to our website, www.ehthsa.com, under quick links at the bottom of the page, click on membership information or contact me, Sandi Roberts at 653-2009 for a membership form.

Can you picture what our community would be like without Project Graduation, Summer Enrichment Program, or these articles informing you of what’s happening in the district? Each school, except the High School, has a Parent’s Club that provide for the individual school but the HSA is the only district wide organization monitoring how our taxes are being spent and the quality of education our students are receiving.

Mary Ann Spiker, who heads Project Graduation, has no students in the district as both of her children have graduated from college yet she has untaken this project for years. Volunteers- carpenters, handymen or women, creative souls, and “non-creative” people with willingness to assist- are needed now to help bring Project Graduation about this year. Many of the jobs needed to be filled can be done in your own home and do not involve a lot of meetings. Project Graduation committee does meet the 1st Monday of the month at 7:15. This year, it’s at the Fernwood Ave. Middle School where Project Graduation will be held due to the construction at the High School. Please attend if you’d like to be involved in the overall planning of Project Graduation.

Dr. McCartney’s superintendent’s report consisted of recognition of the following students:

  • Kyle Bye, Parth Halundhwala, Ben Nealy, and James Hamalian for their win in the Students in Free Enterprise High School competition.
  • Brian Casas and James Tucker, selected to the All South Jersey Band on Bass Clarinet and F-Horn respectively.
  • Zach Agostino, Scott Miller and Tim Little, 1st Team Cape-Atlantic League in Football.

During the Public Portion of the BOE meeting, a citizen questioned what was happening with the artificial tuff field at the High School. When told that the township had put their $400,000 share on hold and therefore, it didn’t look like the High School would be getting artificial tuff, the gentlemen questioned if the district would approach the CRDA for financial assistance. Mr. Gavin, BOE President, stated that the CRDA has turned the district down before but requested the Superintendent give it another try. He went on to state the artificial tuff having the cost estimated and would be compared to the cost of the necessary improvements that had to be made to the field.
