The first Board of Education (BOE) meeting of March occurred on the 11th. The Superintendent’s Report started with recognition of Stephen Marcus, Social Studies Instructor at the High School, for his work on the Holocaust and Genocide which won him a prestigist National Award given by the Honey and Maurice Alexrod Foundation out of Washington D.C.

Dr. Heery continued with the announcement that the Eagle Academy Culinary Students will prepare a meal for the BOE members on April 8 at 6 PM. This is part of their schooling in order to graduate.

It was then time for the Governor’s Teacher Recognition Program or as it’s known, Teacher of the Year.  Each candidate was nominated by his or her peers and will receive $500 for the classroom or school. The winners are as follows:

Swift                                          Ms. Karen Ogborn

Slaybaugh                                  Ms. Christine Lane

Davenport                                 Ms. Tara Flaherty

There were no comments or questions during the public portion of the meeting. Student representatives Rhett Williamson and Yaser Khalid reported the Spirit Week at the High is March 17 thru the 21st and that coming in April will be the March of Dimes Walk.

            Personnel:

The formal adoption of the 2008/2009 school budget will be at the next BOE meeting to be held on 3/25 at 8 PM in the BOE room of the Alder Ave. Middle School.

In other news, Bids finally went out on the first phase of the High School to the tune of 19 million dollars. The State has taken three and a half years to put this out to bid.

Candidate’s Night, presented by the HSA and the Education Foundation, has been moved to Thursday, April 3rd at 7 PM in the BOE room of the Alder Ave. Middle School. There will be an open forum for members of the audience to ask questions. Any questions are to be written down and will be passed on to a moderator to read. Please attend so you can make an informed vote on who you’d like to represent you on the BOE. If you are unable to attend but have a question, email it to me at SRfromEHT@aol.com. and I will pass it on.

On a final note, help is needed for Project Graduation, the alcohol and drug free party thrown 6/18/08 for graduating seniors and their guest. Last year, close to 700 students were kept off the streets and had a wonderful time dancing, playing games, winning prizes and being thoroughly entertained.  Not only are volunteers needed to staff that night but for help making the decorations (talent not necessary but a willingness to complete a predetermined project in your home at your convenience), set up that day, and break down at the end of the night. Don’t wait to be a part of this worthwhile project until your student is a senior as you’ll have a lot to do that night as it is. Join today and help your student earn points towards a HSA scholarship. Contact Mary Anne Spiker though the HSA website at www. EHTHSA.com and click on Project Graduation.
