On Wednesday, July 16th, Dr. Scott McCartney was named successor Superintendent when Dr. Heery retires in January. Dr. Heery started his Super-intendent’s Report for the July 22, 2008 Board of Education (BOE) meeting issuing congratulations to Dr. McCartney. He then went on to the Collaborative Assessment and Planning for Achievement (CAPA) on the Miller School. This 51 page report, covering 7 areas, acknowledges where the Miller school is doing well and areas that need to improve. Dr. Heery stated that overall the report was favorable and many of the suggestions for improvement are or will be implemented. The meeting was then turned over to Ms. Amy Houck, colleague of the BOE solicitor, Mr. Will Donio. Ms. Houck reviewed the Code of Ethics for School Board Members which is an annual requirement of QSAC( Quality Single Accountability Continuum). In the Public Portion: It was asked what the time line is for the High School project. Dr. Heery replied that he didn’t have the exact time line memorized but that everything was on target and the schools should open on time. Financing is needed for the additional buses and technology equipment to be purchased in 08/09. The budgeted rate was 5.5% but the contract was awarded to Commerce commercial Leasing at an actual rate of 3.75%. Duct cleaning at the Alder Ave. Middle School has a fiscal impact of $52,520.00. The re-roofing of the Fernwood Middle School was awarded to D.A. Nolt at a special meeting on July 15th and will cost $2,179,957.00. Personnel: · Gayle Newcomb, Grade 1 at Davenport Primary, is taking the place of Ms. Nestore who resigned. · Alicia Carrier, Multiple Disabilities(Autism) at Davenport Primary is replacing K. Picciotti, who resigned. · Geranor Pezzotti-Venafro, High School Spanish, will be filling the position created with the retirement of L. Becker. · Erica Costagliola, Spanish at Eagle Academy and the High School, is taking the place of K. Welch-Sanchez. · Maria Dolbow(Baltera), Reading Specialist at Slaybaugh, will be on maternity/child rearing leave from 9/29/08-3/2/09. · Michelle Lambert(Decker), High School LRC will be on maternity leave from 10/10-12/11/08. · Christina Hampton, grade 6 at Fernwood Middle, will be on maternity/child rearing leave from 10/20/08-2/2/09. · John Pope, High School Assistant Girls Crew Coach, resigned on 7/14/08. · Melissa Nestore, 1st grade at Davenport Primary, resigned as of 7/9/08. The next BOE meeting will be August 12, 2008 in the BOE room of the Alder Ave. Middle School at 8 PM. FYI- There will be a special orientation for incoming freshmen at the High School. It will take place from 10 AM to 1 PM on Aug.21 (rain date Aug.22) at the high school football stadium. The event will cover important information for student to learn about high school and will include a barbeque and games.
