It was a late night for the January 8, 2008 Board of Education (BOE) meeting. Dr. Heery’s superintendent report started with a document of recognition to Jerel Santiago for his achievements and accolades in football. The Superintendent went on to announce that 3 students received Early Decision to Ivy League schools. Daniel Sholler will be going to University of Pennsylvania, Hai Pham to Yale University and Piao(Simon) Liao to NYU.

The meeting was turned over to the Education Foundation to present approximately $9000 in mini-grants to varies teachers in the school district. There were 34 applications and 19 were awarded mini-grants. Check out the recipients at http://www.eht.k12.nj.us/~murphyf/ehtef/index.htm. The Education Foundation also awards $2000 in scholarships each year.

In the Public portion of the BOE meeting, Mr. Brett Charleston, Athletic Director for the district spoke about the improvements made in the 15 months he has been with the district, how upset the negative articles in The Press and The Current has made many people, and while he appreciated the parents’ concerns at the November 27th BOE meeting, he was frustrated by their approach. He went on to say that winning isn’t everything, the budget for professional development for coaches has increased this year, and there is a 27 point evaluation for every coach. Mr. Charleston was followed by other coaches, student athletes, and parents who all indorsed the current athletic program. Points were made on how winning is cyclical, life lessons are taught through sports, motivation and respect of an individual for the sport, coaches, and fellow team mates influences the type of season a team may have, academics are stressed along with an athlete sport’s performance, and how much pride each of the speakers had in the athletic program and teams. Several speakers were former students of EHT who are now coaches in the district because of their experiences as an athlete and student.  One of the parent from the November 27th meeting spoke about how the group’s concerns were not to attack or malign anyone or any programs but to enhance and improve our student athletes experiences. Another parent agreed that there is some really exciting and positive thing happening in EHTHS sports and that they just want them to be better. Dr. Heery responded to the audience by saying that their comments will be evaluated, invited everyone to the sports and athletics committee meeting to be held the following night, and while the subject won’t be resolved tonight, the BOE, student athletes, parents and coaches can create a “framework” to help the district become more successful.
