After the Flag Salute, a moment of silence was observed for the passing of BOE member Mr. Neil Anderson’s father and also for Linda Lauer, Teacher Aide at Miller. Dr. McCartney was acting Superintendent at the September 9, 2008 Board of Education (BOE) meeting. Dr. Heery was present but sitting in Dr. McCartney’s “normal seat”. Dr. McCartney started the Superintendent’s Report by turning the meeting over to the Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds committee, Mr. “Jay” Kearns. Mr. Kearns reported that the CO for the 2nd floor of the E- wing of the High School was given and that the stairwells were in. Bids on Phase Two of the High School, which include the gym, auditorium, part of the cafeteria, front offices, and parking lots, are being evaluated at this time and not yet awarded. He also talked about the frustration in having the state oversee the Phase One as things take twice as long to be completed. Mr. Kearns gave the example of running the Comcast cable from the street to the building; each step upon completion had to be stopped until inspected by the state before the next step could be undertaken resulting in 6 to 7 days. Without the state’s involvement, it would have been completed in 24 hours. Ms. Gruccio then spoke about the work at the High School. Bussed students are now entering the building by the front door. Student drop off/pick up is now at the pool entrance as the front of the High School is busses only. (As a reminder, if you need to pick up your student, please park at the side of the building by the pool and walk to the front entrance to sign your student out.) Ms. Gruccio reported that storm and sewer work has begun. Dr. McCartney expressed his Thanks to everyone from the staff to the students for their part in making the start of the 07/08 school year a success. As of the 9/9 meeting, the district enrollment was 7884 with 95 students with appointments to enroll. The High School has approximately 2800 of those students. Class sizes in the district remain decent; high teen’s to low twenty’s in grades K-3, 4 &5th grades are around 22, and the Middle schools class size is in the low 20’s. There were no comments during the public portion. Student representatives, Kristen Beatty and Dhara Vyas, reported on the start up of varies clubs at the High School and made minor suggestions such as making sure the Freshmen have maps, to improve the beginning of next year’s school year. The policy meeting set for the 10th was cancelled with no reschedule date at this time. Under Committee Reports: President Galvin reported there had been some changes to the Personnel committee; Mr. Pugliese is to be chairperson instead of Mr. Anderson, and Mr. Anderson will chair the negotiation committee instead of Ms. Spiker. Mr. Kearns reported that there was a minor leak in the roof being replaced at Fernwood with the prior severe storms. Ms. Szilagyi noted that Late Buses have started and that Bus Radio is on hold as a new system is coming. Personnel: Lauren Cooke is voluntarily transferring from Basic Skills, grade 3 to Basic Skills, grade 2, at Davenport Elementary. Jennifer Huff is going for Social Studies for 8th grade at Alder Ave Middle School to Guidance Counselor.
